Hammond Hills

Corporal Lester Hammond Jr., a radio operator, was a Medal of Honor recipient for his actions in the Korean War.  Cpl. Hammond was a member of a 6-man reconnaissance patrol, which had penetrated enemy territory.  Ambushed, surrounded by a large hostile force and injured, he refused to seek shelter and, remaining in an exposed place, called for artillery fire inflicting heavy enemy casualties and repelling the enemy’s attempt to overrun the position.  He maintained his stand until mortally wounded. Cpl Hammond’s actions allowed a friendly platoon to reach the patrol and evacuate it across friendly lines.
